It is different from most areas of the Alentejo.
In this region, freshwater springs flow from the granite mountains, filling the land with colour and abundance.
The mountains give way to the typical planes of the Alentejo, providing an endlessly varied and beautiful landscape.
Traditional communities remain an essential part of the region, holding village traditional events each year and reaffirming culture both local and international.
June and July present the Marvão International Music Festival that fills the historical architecture.
Music permeates the fortress of Marvão and the surrounding areas.
The vibrating elegance of symphonies, recitals, and chants embraces ancient stones.
Exceptional altitude wines are meticulously made in the plane pockets protected by Serra de São Mamede.
The Natural Park is becoming the cradle of these increasingly important old and rare wines.
The unique nature and the abundant spring water helped our ancestors occupy this region from an early time, and signs of their existence can still be seen. Many Megalithic structures remains: dolmens, cromlechs and graves carved in stone can be seen.
It is a sacred ground, a living museum that clearly illustrates the fascinating megalithic period.
Romans and Muslims are among the many cultures that also occupied these mountains until the period of the Conquests and the foundation of Portugal as we know it today.
Templars joined that quest and helped the King's armies in their path to victory.
Their symbols and castles have survived and many remain in remarkable condition today.
The local people, known for their warm and generous hospitality, are very accepting of estrangeiros (foreigners).
They will enjoy welcoming you into their community and encouraging you to attend the village traditional events, drink traditional Portuguese coffee, and enjoy the local gastronomy.
